A microcrystalline variety of silicon dioxide, chalcedony usually occurs as mammillary or botryoidal masses. The colors is highly variable, and may be white, blue, red, green, brown, or black.
Varieties of chalcedony include jasper, an opaque form; agate, a form with concentrie banding of different colors; moss agate, with dark dendritie patterns; chrysoprase, a green variety; and onyx, in which the banding is parallel.
Carnelian is red to reddish brown, and sard is light to dark brown. There is a white streak. Chalcedony is a transparent to translucent, or opaque mineral, and it has a vitreous to waxy luster.
