Prasiolite (Greek-leek-green stones) is not found in nature. It is produced by heating violet amethyst or yellowish quartz from the deposit Montezuma in Minas Gerais, Brazil to a temperature of about 930 degrees F (500 degrees C). Other deposits of heatable amethyst have recently been reported in Arizona (United States). In sunlight, the color commonly fades.
