It occurs as semitransparent, rhombohedral crystal with poor luster, or as concretionary masses, sometimes with irregular, contorted veining.
Normally a definite pink, it can be faded pink or slightly orange. Chemical alteration turns it blackish or dull brownish.
Usually used in larger pieces, as then the marking is most distinct, for ornamental objects as well as for cabochons and necklaces. The stones are usually faceted and in demand by collectors.
